do “duplicate” lookup relationships insist on identical mappings?

The D365 guys have come up with this Global Address Book situation:

Notice the top 2 show lookups to contact.  I don’t know what the functional difference is supposed to be — not sure MS does — but I am unable to trim one from the mapping.  For my purposes I would like only the top one to fill in on the form when I hit the New CfC/V button.

But I can’t drop the second one.  Is this because every lookup relationship mapping MUST include ALL like lookups?  Is this regular, normal behavior?
